A Journey of Resilience: Living and Thriving with Schizophrenia is a first-person autobiographical documentary in which filmmaker Martin Ostrom explores the intersection of grief, mental illness, and creative identity. After the death of his father, Martin becomes preoccupied with questions about consciousness, memory, and what happens after death. As he processes grief, his schizophrenia intensifies, leading to episodes of psychosis in which reality, imagination, and filmmaking begin to blur. During this period, Martin becomes deeply immersed in his work in the film industry and develops an obsession with documenting his experiences in real time. This includes a complex creative idea involving filming at CERN in Switzerland and presenting it to a friend as part of an elaborate narrative experiment, which becomes entangled with psychotic thinking and delusional interpretation of events. The film moves between present-day reflection, archival material, and recovered memories of hospitalizations, therapy, and recovery. Through this structure, Martin revisits how psychosis shaped his perception of reality, his relationships, and his understanding of identity. Ultimately, the film becomes a process of integration: transforming confusion, grief, and fragmented memory into a coherent story of survival, self-awareness, and creative resilience.
